Gaffney's Matthew Hooper was one of two players to shoot an even-par 72 in the morning session of the the first round of the 34th annual Hardaway Invitational Golf Tournament on Friday at Fort Benning, setting his team up with an early lead with a 301.
Montgomery Academy was in second after the morning session with a 308 and Spring Valley was in third with a 318.
The only other player to shoot par in the morning session was UMS-Wright's Bobby Wyatt. His team finished the first round tied for sixth with a 323.
Montgomery Academy's Ben Mangum and Gaffney's Phillip Rogers both shot a 74, making them the only other golfers to break 75.Central-Phenix City shot a 368. The Red Devils' Chance Renfroe and Wes Davis shot an 87, Matthew Ledbetter shot a 94 and Jeremy Head finished with a 100.

St. James and Northview (Ala.) were both disqualified because of missing golfers but played through the round for the experience. St. James shot a 252 with three golfers and Northview, with the addition of a Hardaway backup, shot a 347.
