Families who plan to spend time on the water this summer can take advantage of Safe Kids Columbus' life jacket distribution this weekend.
Safe Kids and the Department of Natural Resources will give away free life jackets to kids ages 4 to 14 at Lake Oliver and Lake Harding.
Pamela Fair, coalition leader for Safe Kids Columbus, said the group hopes to target avid boaters with the distribution. To receive the life jacket, the child must be present so Safe Kids can properly fit each child.
'We are really stressing the proper fit," Fair said.
Never miss a local story.
Parents must also be present to sign a waiver.
Safe Kids will be at Lake Oliver City Marina from 5-7 p.m Friday. The organization will be at Idle Hour (DNR boat ramp area) at Lake Harding Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon. This is the third year Safe Kids has distributed free life jackets, and the organization gave away between 200 and 300 jackets last year. Fair said Safe Kids would distribute another 200 to 300 this year on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information, call Safe Kids at 706-321-6183.
