Country singer Chuck Wicks, who had 51 points after Monday's "Dancing with the Stars" show, will not return to the dance floor next week. Chuck and his partner, real-life girlfriend Julianne Hough were disappointed after learning they'd been eliminated.
"I think it was the group dance that did us in," Chuck said. Monday was the first time this season that a group score was added to each celebrity's individual dance score. Chuck, Melissa Rycroft and Shawn Johnson were members of the same tango team which earned 25 points. The other tango team (compiled of Ty Murray, Lil' Kim and Gilles Marini) earned 28 points.
Chuck and Julianne recently performed at Auburn, Alabama's Sticks Country Music Festival where both singers encouraged fans to vote for them.
"Alabama is going to save us from elimination," Chuck later said. Maybe Alabama country music fans were outnumbered by fans of bachelorette Melissa, who didn't dance on Monday's show.
Melissa was dressed and on stage during Tuesday's results show. She said "it broke her heart" to not dance Monday. A rib injury kept her from performing and judges had to score Melissa based on taped footage from a rehearsal. She received the lowest score of the night with 46 points. Though she didn't participate in the group dance, she still earned the same points as her other team members including Chuck.
Rapper Lil' Kim was the first celebrity who was announced "safe" on Tuesday's results show. Lil' Kim was the top scorer after Monday's show with 56 points.
Lil' Kim will compete against rodeo star Ty who earned 52 points after Monday's show. Viewers seemed to agreed with judge Len Goodman who said Ty "nailed it" during the group tango. Previously Len told Ty, "unless you come out in this group tango and really perform, I think it's time you hit the trail."
Ty's trail apparently leads back to the dance studio where he'll be joined by actor Gilles, who had 55 points after Monday's competition, and gymnast Shawn, who received 52 points.
The ABC show will return at 8 p.m. Monday when the remaining five celebrities will compete unless injuries continue to plague the dancers.
Melissa was optimistic about her treatment and hopeful that she would return to the dance floor next week.
Here's a roundup of Monday's individual performances: After scoring a 29 out of 30 last week, Melissa's taped performance earned 21 points from judges Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Toniolo, who each scored the rehearsal with a 7.
The judges awarded 27 points to actor Gilles Marini and his partner Cheryl Burke for their Lindy Hop. Injuries were a common theme of the evening. Gilles complained of a shoulder injury and got a shot before the show to manage the pain.
Chuck Wicks and his partner Julianne Hough received a 26 for their cha-cha.
Shawn Johnson and her partner Mark Ballas earned 27 points for the samba.
Ty Murray's salsa with partner Chelsie Hightower earned a 24.
Lil' Kim and her partner Derek Hough received a 28 for their pasa doble.
