A robbery and kidnapping suspect was shot in the stomach Thursday night after he and his partner were caught inside a Columbus apartment.
When Columbus police responded to a shooting call at the Southside Court Apartments about 11:30 p.m. they discovered a man lying in the parking lot suffering from a gunshot wound to the groin and another man suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen inside of an apartment.
Investigators later determined two suspects, both armed with handguns, had entered the apartment and tied up the two people that were inside. The suspects were searching the apartment when a visitor arrived and knocked on the door.
It wasn't long after the suspects let him in the apartment that he realized what was going on. He attempted to flee after spotting the guns, but a fight broke out and both he and one of the robbers were shot during the fray.
The visitor was shot in the groin and one of the suspects was shot in the abdomen. The uninjured suspect fled the scene.
The injured suspect, who has not yet been identified, fell in the apartment where he remained until he was transported to The Medical Center. He is in critical condition after undergoing surgery for his wound. The man suffering from the groin injury is undergoing treatment at The Medical Center for non life threatening injuries.
Investigators are searching for Johnny Ricardo Mays, 35, as a suspect in this case. Warrants have been issued for Mays charging him with aggravated assault and kidnapping.
