A groundbreaking will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday for Columbus' rails-to-trail program at the intersection of Warms Springs and Talbotton roads.
The $12.5 million project is funded from the 1999 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and money from the Georgia Department of Transportation. When completed in about 18 months, the project will provide a 12-foot wide asphalt trail from the 14th Street Pedestrian Bridge downtown to Psalmond Road, using an old Norfolk Southern Railroad bed.
Along its path will be two park and ride areas and several bridges.
