More than 250 people gathered on an old railroad track Wednesday to kick off Columbus’ rails to trails project.
When completed, the 11-mile trail will run from 14th Street downtown to Psalmond Road. “ I know there are other trials in the state and the country,” Rick Jones, director of Columbus’ Planning Department, said during a groundbreaking at Warm Springs and Talbotton Road. “When this is completed, it will be a special place for us all.”
The $12.5 million project is expected to take 18 months to complete. It is the last one approved using $11 million from the 1999 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, $1 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation and $500,000 secured through U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop's office.
Jones said work was under way Wednesday with crews putting in sidewalks on 14th Street.
