Danny Gokey, pegged early on as this season's "American Idol" winner, was eliminated from the reality TV competition Wednesday. Over 88 million votes were cast, host Ryan Seacrest said.
This means Kris Allen and Adam Lambert will compete in next week's finale.
Gokey got significant air time since the competition's start, largely due to his compelling back story: His wife died shortly before the competition. Prior to his Wednesday elimination, he'd never before been in the bottom three.
But fans rallied around underdog Allen after Tuesday's performances, thanks to his unique acoustic take on Kanye West's "Heartless."
Never miss a local story.
While judges praised Gokey, he seemed in recent weeks to fall into a pattern of predictability, consistently singing ballads and adding little musical creativity.
