Opelika police are investigating a Memorial Day traffic accident which killed two people.
Brenda Payne Kesler of Opelika and Jeffrey Glen Hollingsworth of Blountsville, Ala., died from multiple blunt force injuries after being involved in a two-car accident on Highway 169 in Opelika at around 12:30 p.m. CDT on Monday, May 25.
When police arrived at the scene of the accident, officers observed that Kesler's 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette and Hollingsworth's 2005 Jeep Wrangler had met head-on in the northbound lane of traffic.
At the time of the accident the Jeep was traveling north in the northbound lane and the Silhouette was traveling south in the northbound lane, according to police.
Kesler, 57, was pronounced dead on the scene at 12:45 p.m. by Lee County deputy coroner Charlotte Patterson. Hollingsworth, 47, was transported to the East Alabama Medical Center and pronounced dead by emergency room physicians at 2:05 p.m.
Chief deputy coroner Gene Manning said Kesler and Hollingsworth had to be removed from their vehicles using extrication equipment. No one else was in either vehicle, he said.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
