Columbus Regional Healthcare System has plans to combine the women and children's services of two of its hospitals to establish a new center, officials announced today.
The women and children's center will consolidate services offered at The Medical Center and Doctors Hospital.
Physicians and organization officials said the comprehensive center will not only help meet the needs of a growing regional population, but also allow ill children to stay closer to home for treatment - rather than traveling with their families to Atlanta or other regions with children's centers.
The project's cost is expected to exceed $30 million. No specific timetable has been set for the center, but officials said construction should begin in 2010. It will be located at either The Medical Center or Doctors Hospital, a decision that should be determined this year.
