Columbus attorney Mark Shelnutt, indicted by a federal grand jury last week on charges including money laundering and attempted bribery, is scheduled for court June 3, records show.
Shelnutt’s initial appearance hearing is set for 10 a.m. before U.S. Magistrate G. Mallon Faircloth. At a first appearance hearing, defendants typically are formally told of the charges against them and how much time in prison they could serve if convicted.
The indictment against Shelnutt alleges that he collected drug money owed to Torrance Hill, a former client who pleaded guilty to drug charges and was sentenced to 24 1/2 years in prison.
Shelnutt appeared Wednesday night at The Loft to perform in the final round of the Rivertown Showdown. He was one of 13 finalists chosen from preliminary rounds that showcased nearly 50 artists. The winner receives a $1,500 prize package.
Shelnutt was the first performer and sang two original songs. He made no comment about the charges against him.
