Keep swabbing your nose with Zicam Cold Remedy and one day you may not be able to smell smoke or a gas leak, the Food and Drug Administration's warning.
The FDA is urging consumers to stop swabbing their nostrils with the zinc-based medicine after 130 reports of users losing their sense of smell, a condition known as anosmia.
Besides impeding your enjoyment of good food and drink, as as losing a sense of smell affects your sense of taste, the condition can be dangerous because you can't smell hazards such as fire and chemical spills.
The Zicam products, identified as Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs and "Kids Size" Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, have not been recalled, the FDA says, though the manufacturer, Mattrixx Initiatives of Scotsdale, Ariz., has quit making the kids size swabs.
