Fort Benning will have a new commander in Maj. Gen. Michael Ferriter as of Wednesday morning.
Maj. Gen. Michael Barbero will relinquish command of the United States Infantry Center and Fort Benning at 9 a.m. on Soldiers Field at Patriot Park next to the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center.
The Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates announced Friday that President Barack Obama has nominated Barbero for appointment to the rank of lieutenant general and assignment as Commander, Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq and Commander, NATO Training Mission-Iraq, United States Central Command.
“This has been the most enjoyable assignment I’ve ever had, and it’s because of Fort Benning, everything that it stands for,” Barbero said in a June 9th interview. “The team we have here, which is tremendous, the mission we have here to totally support an Army at war and provide trained and ready soldiers.”
