Columbus police are asking for the public’s help in finding the person responsible for a hit and run accident last month that claimed the life of a 24-year-old Columbus man.
James Edward Collins was riding his skateboard in the southside lane of Buena Vista Road shortly after midnight on June 26, 2009, when he was struck from behind by an unknown car and killed, according to a police report. The driver of the car left the scene, traveling eastbound on Buena Vista Road, police said.
Police held a press conference with Collins’ family Thursday morning, asking for anyone with information on the incident to come forward. Investigators do not have a description of the driver, but they were able to determine the type of car, based on pieces of a broken headlight found at the scene.
Police believe Collins was struck by a light-colored 2007 through 2009 model SUV, possibly a GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe or Cadillic Escalade.Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call the Columbus police motor squad at 706-225-4040 or Crimestoppers at 706-353-3188.
There is the possibility of a reward, up to $1,000 for a person giving information leading to a conviction in this case.
