A Columbus man who was struck in the head Thursday during a fight over a woman has died, police said.
Muscogee County Coroner Bill Thrower pronounced 39-year-old Kenneth Heath dead at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at The Medical Center. Police have arrested 37-year-old Bobby Lee Guthrie of Columbus in connection with the case.
Officers and paramedics were called Thursday around 2 p.m. to the 3000 block of Fourth Avenue, where they found Heath suffering from a blow to the head. Heath had been hit with a cinder block or brick during a fight, said Sgt. Harvey Hatcher.
"The dispute was over a woman," Hatcher said. "It’s been ongoing for a while."
Heath was brought to The Medical Center, where he spent about two days in critical condition before dying.
Guthrie was arrested on an aggravated assault charge around 10:20 p.m. Friday at a relative’s home in Columbus, Hatcher said. Police were still investigating the case Saturday evening and had yet to confirm whether they will upgrade the charge to murder.
Guthrie will appear in Columbus Recorders Court Wednesday.
Heath’s body will be sent to Atlanta Monday for an autopsy.
