Police have reopened the five-block stretch of Second Avenue that earlier had been closed because of a gas leak.
Columbus police had been rerouting traffic around that section of the avenue, and sending vehicles east to Veterans Parkway.
That caused a backup on 23rd Street, which unlike 18th Street is only two lanes between Second Avenue and the parkway.
Authorities at the scene say an Atmos crew doing work on the roadside hit a gas main about 9:30 a.m. Workers had it fixed in about an hour, and no evacuations were necessary, they said.
Never miss a local story.
Police had cleared the barricades and allowed normal traffic to resume at 11:25 a.m.
