The Columbus Botanical Garden, 3603 Weems Road, is holding the 2009 Scarecrow Contest, "Scarecrows of the Silver Screen." Judging is Oct. 10.
All scarecrow entries will be on display starting Oct. 10 through Nov. 29, so they must be durable, with all ornamentation securely attached. No glass, hazardous materials, tires or major appliances may be used in the construction of scarecrows.
Scarecrows must be at least 4-feet-tall, with the maximum height of 10 feet. The scarecrow exhibit may include a maximum of four figures. Each scarecrow must have a vertical wooden support of at least a 2-foot-by-4-foot post. This post should extend 12-18 inches beyond the bottom of the scarecrow to be used to support the figure in the ground.
Entrants must bring their fully assembled scarecrows to the Columbus Botanical Garden between 8-11 a.m. Oct. 10. All scarecrows must be completed by 11 a.m. Judging begins at noon.
Awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m.
The themes for the scarecrows are: Silver Screen Heroes, Kids' Classics and Celebrities.
Age categories are Youth (pre-school through 11); Group (any entry from a club, work, scout group, church, etc.); Tween/Adult (11-years-old and older). Prizes will be awarded in each age category. First prize is $100; second place is $50 and third prize is $25.
The entry fee is $10. All entry forms and fees must be turned in by 5 p.m. Oct. 5.
