Hey, land lubbers: Saturday marks Talk Like A Pirate Day 2009.
The event started in 1995 as a holiday between friends. It got mainstream attention in 2002, when syndicated humor columnist Dave Barry included it in a column. The holiday always falls on Sept. 19.
On the Talk Like A Pirate Day Web site, the holiday's founders explain its purpose:
"Talking like a pirate is fun. It's really that simple. It adds a zest, a swagger, to your every day conversation. Do you need another reason?"
Visit the Web site, available by clicking on the link at the side of this page, for basic pirate vocabulary. You'll also get sample pirate pickup strategies, like this always endearing line: "Wanna shiver me timbers?"
