Authorities say a Columbus teen lied about a drive-by shooting that occurred Thursday on Celia Drive.
Dhaqwan Jones, 18, told police he was walking north on Celia Drive near Empire Street about 5:15 p.m. when the driver of a black, Toyota SUV shot him in the groin then sped off.
Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the teen to The Medical Center where he was later listed in stable condition.
Police now say Jones shot himself while carrying a loaded hand gun. It was the downward angle of the shot that convinced investigators he was not the victim of a drive-by shooting.
Charges could be pending.
