A LaGrange man is dead after his bicycle and a SUV collided Friday.
James Calvin Wheat, 63, was headed home to Amberwood Apartments on his bike around 11:40 a.m., said LaGrange Police Officer Michael Hewett. A preliminary investigation showed Wheat was travelling north on North Greenwood Street near Beachwood Circle when a Toyota Highlander tried to overtake the cyclist. Police said the bike and vehicle, driven by 64-year-old LaGrange resident Jean Cox, then collided, and Wheat was thrown from the bike.
Wheat was air-lifted to The Medical Center in Columbus, where he later died of traumatic brain injury. Troup County Coroner Jeff Cook pronounced him dead at 3:37 p.m.
Police are investigating. Hewett said Saturday he did not know if any charges would be filed.
