A 45-year-old Columbus man ended up in the hospital after being struck with a large piece of wood late Thursday, police said.
An officer was called a little after midnight Thursday to an assault in the 1900 block of First Avenue. The victim and a witness told police a man had hit the victim with a piece of wood outside of his apartment complex, leaving him with cuts to the head and face as well as pain in his abdomen.
The victim was taken to The Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries.
A homeless man, 44-year-old James Godwin Mells, was arrested and booked into the Muscogee County Jail at 1:10 a.m. Friday. He faces a felony charge of aggravated assault. Mells appeared Saturday in Columbus Recorder’s Court. Bond was set at $15,000 and his case was bound over to Superior Court.
