Several blessing of the animals services will be held in the Columbus area this weekend, beginning Saturday.
Clergy from St. Anne Catholic Church, 2000 Kay Circle, will bless animals after the 10 a.m. Mass on Saturday.
On Sunday, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4026 Macon Road, will have a service at 2 p.m. St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2100 Hilton Ave., has a service at 4 p.m. Sunday. Trinity Episcopal Church, 1130 First Ave., has a service at 4 p.m. Sunday. And, St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 69 Mobley Road in Hamilton, Ga., will have a service at 5 p.m. Sunday.
Such services are usually held in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, a 12th century Catholic deacon who founded the Order of Friars Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscans.

St. Francis is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and Italy, and it is customary for churches to hold ceremonies honoring animals around his feast day of Oct. 4.
Children and adults are welcome to bring their pets.
