After being absent last week, Len Goodman returned to judge week three of "Dancing with the Stars" Monday night. Mr. Grumpy brought his high standards and low-numbered scoring paddles to the show. Points from Monday's show will be added to viewers' votes. The celebrity receiving the lowest combined score will be eliminated on Tuesday's show.
Singer Mya earned ten points each from judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba but only received seven points from Len. Her total score of 27 made her the night's leader. Swimmer Natalie Coughlin was close behind with 26 points. Former NFL star Michael Irvin received the lowest points of the night with 14. Conservative politician Tom Delay had 15 points.
Here's a recap of the third week of performances:
At the beginning of the show, host Tom Bergeron said it was unclear whether Delay would dance because his pre-stress fracture turned into a stress fracture. Near the end of the show, Delay gave the audience an update. He had stress fractures in both feet. Though his doctors and the show's producers encouraged him not to dance, Delay didn't listen. "What's a little pain when you can party?" he asked.
The judges applauded his courage, but their admiration wasn't reflected in the score. He and his partner Cheryl Burke earned a 15 for their samba.
Carrie Ann Inaba, 6: "You are easy on the eyes when you dance... I love the entertainment value."
Len Goodman, 4: "I think you're a hero. If I had a stress fracture in both feet, I wouldn't be judging let alone dancing."
Bruno Tonioli, 5: "You really are a super-trooper."
NFL star Michael Irvin and partner Anna Demidova scored a low 14 out of 30 points for their samba.
Bruno Tonioli, 4: "Sometimes you danced this like a tank."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 5: "You're dancing too small... Move, use that space."
Len Goodman, 5: "It's a hard dance for a big guy... It was a bit disappointing."
The first tens of the season went to singer Mya and partner Dmitry Chaplin for their romantic rumba. Their score was 27 out of 30 points.
Carrie Ann Inaba, 10: "I had chills the whole time."
Len Goodman, 7: "Be still my beating heart. It had chemistry. There was so much going on... I felt it was too crammed with trick after trick.
Bruno Tonioli, 10: "You put all of America in the mood for love... Fabulous."
Swimmer Natalie Coughlin and partner Alec Mazo received 26 points for their rumba.
Bruno Tonioli, 9: "I knew you could fly but you've gone stratospheric tonight."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 9: "That was so gorgeous to watch. The intensity was there."
Len Goodman, 8: "It was very expressive... I thought it was an excellent performance."
Singer Kelly Osbourne and Louis Van Amstel earned a 20 out of 30 for their samba. Kelly admitted that she's struggling with nerves, but she's getting better.
Len Goodman, 6: "Your problem is confidence... I'm convinced you're a good dancer, you've just got to convince yourself."
Bruno Tonioli, 7: "There were some very beautiful sections... Forget about doubt."
Carrie Ann Inaba, "The technique is ridiculous. Stay focused."
Singer Aaron Carter and partner Karina Smirnoff earned a 21 for their rumba.
Bruno Tonioli, 7: "Plenty of attack... It lacked a little bit of fluidity."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 8: "You move beautifully... You are overexaggerating everything."
Len Goodman, 6: "It lacked musicality."
Ultimate fighter Chuck Liddell and partner Anna Trebunskaya earned a 17 for their fun but bad samba.
Len Goodman, 5: "You thoroughly entertained me."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 6: "You have the right attitude... Samba may not be your best dance."
Bruno Tonioli, 6: "I can really see the huge amount of work that went into this. It still is like a samba for zombie town."
Singer Donny Osmond and partner Kym Johnson earned a 21 for their rumba, but the highlight was the "chemistry" between Donny and Bruno.
Len Goodman, 7: "You should try to straighten your legs... well done."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 7: "Very daring to do the solo in the rumba."
Bruno Tonioli, 7: "It looked pretty... A bit airy-fairy at times... Turn to the dark side." Donny took the advice to heart and grabbed the judge, leaned him over the desk and stopped just short of planting a passionate kiss on Bruno's face. The crowd laughed and hooted. Donny said he was afraid he wouldn't be allowed back in Utah.
Actress Debi Mazar and her partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy scored 17 points out of 30 for their samba. The judges were disappointed that Debi's fiery personality didn't come through in the dance.
Carrie Ann Inaba, 6: "It was really cute... It was a little safe."
Len Goodman, 5: "It was neat and precise... it just didn't ignite."
Bruno Tonioli, 6: "You lose the flow... in spite of the hunk (Maksim) you never put your hands on him."
Len Goodman's grumpy side came out when judging snowboarder Louie Vito and partner Chelsie Hightower's rumba. The couple earned 20 points for their dance.
Bruno Tonioli, 7: "That's chemistry. That's how to play a girl."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 8: "Your chemistry is unbelievable."
Len Goodman, 5: "I so much wanted to be nice, but it was wild. There was no finesse."
Actress Melissa Joan Hart and partner Mark Ballas earned a 19 for the samba. Though the judges agreed that Melissa improved each week, they weren't sold on her samba.
Len Goodman, 6: "I liked your foot and leg action."
Bruno Tonioli, 7: "I knew you could switch it on."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 6: "I just don't believe it when you dance... I still sense the fear."
The judges told model Joanna Krupa and partner Derek Hough that their samba got the party started. The pair earned 23 points for their sexy dance.
Bruno Tonioli, 8: "Full of excitement and life."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 7: "You are fearless."
Len Goodman, 8: "It had quality stamped all over it."
"Iron Chef America" chairman Mark Decascos and partner Lacey Schwimmer earned an 18 for their rumba.
Len Goodman, 6: "It lacked a bit of chemistry and a little bit of warmth between you."
Bruno Tonioli, 6: "It lacked the fluidity necessary for the rumba."
Carrie Ann Inaba, 6: "You're thinking too much... It was kind of uncomfortable to watch."
Last week model Kathy Ireland and her partner Tony Dovolani were eliminated. Guest judge Baz Luhrmann was on the panel in place of Len Goodman.
In week one, actor Ashley Hamilton with partner Edyta Sliwinska and singer Macy Gray with partner Jonathan Roberts were eliminated.
