Staff Sgt. Justin D. Grimm with the 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vincenza, Italy, will be awarded the nation's third highest military decoration in a ceremony to be held Monday on Fort Benning.
The ceremony will take place at the Airborne Walk at 3 p.m. and will include a presentation of two Bronze Star medals with Valor device and one Army Commendation Medal.
Staff Sgt. Clifton M. Anderson, Jr. and Sgt. Michael J. Lawrence, of the 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, will each receive a Bronze Star with Valor device and Staff Sgt. Zachari A. Rushing will receive the Army Commendation Medal with valor device. Grimm, Anderson and Lawrence will be recognized for their actions during a 2008 battle in Afghanistan when they were assigned to Chosen Company, 2nd Battalion (Airborne).
As their unit was preparing to leave the country after a 15-month tour of duty, their vehicle patrol base was attacked by as many as 200 insurgents on the morning of July 13, 2008. The battle lasted for hours. Nine Americans were killed, and 27 wounded.
Rushing, assigned to D Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), will be recognized for his actions following a catastrophic improvised explosive device strike in 2007 in Charbaran District, Afghanistan.
