Shoppers have three more days to take advantage of a lower sales tax on items bought in Columbus.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2010, sales tax will increase from six cents on every dollar to seven cents on every dollar. The increase is due to a one percent Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax for school construction, approved by voters in September.
The tax will last for five years or until the Muscogee County School District collects $223 million for a variety of building projects. Projects include a new Carver High, additions to Northside High and Richards Middle, technology and athletics upgrades across the district and four other new schools: a new middle school, two new elementary schools and a fine arts academy.
