Northside High has named baseball coach David Smart as its next softball coach.
In 2009, his first year at Northside, Smart led the Patriots baseball team to the state quarterfinals. He takes over a softball team that has been to the Elite Eight three consecutive years and finished state runner-up in Class AAA last season.
“It's an honor to come in and be part a program that Coach (Chera) Riles and her staff did a tremendous job with,” Smart said. “Over the last seven years, they've done a great job building it up.”
Riles stepped down in December, citing the desire to spend more time with her family.
