Opelika police are investigating the city's first traffic fatality of the year.
The wreck occurred this morning on Interstate 85 at exit 62 on the northbound side of the highway. Officers responding to the scene discovered a late model Ford Expedition off the roadway on the east side of the exit ramp. The vehicle was upside down and engulfed in flames, police said.
Emergency responders located a woman who had been partially ejected on the driver's side of the vehicle. She was identified as 51-year-old Curlean Slaughter Warren, of Atlanta.
Lee County Deputy Coroner Charlotte Patterson pronounced Warren dead at the scene at 4:25 a.m.
A passenger in the vehicle was flown to The Medical Center in Columbus for head trauma treatment. Additional information on the passenger was not released.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Opelika Police Department.
