Columbus police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a fatal shooting of a man on Friday.
James Edward Evans, 22, of Columbus died at 3:55 a.m. Saturday at The Medical Center after a bullet entered his right shoulder and exited his left. His body was sent to Atlanta for an autopsy.
Police have arrested Jarrod Fleming of Columbus. He is being held in the Muscogee County Jail for a 9 a.m. Monday hearing in Columbus Recorders Court. He is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
“At this time, Fleming stated it was an accident due to them playing with guns,” said Police Lt. Lynn Joiner said. “But the investigation is ongoing.”
Between 11:30 p.m. and midnight Friday, Evans was brought to the hospital in a private vehicle, Joiner said. Detectives then went to Evans’ apartment on Lamore Street, where they were told the incident happened. Witnesses pointed the finger at Fleming, who is a relative of Evans’ roommate and lives in the same apartment building, Joiner said. Fleming was arrested at a relative’s house near Lamore Street.
“We’ve heard nothing about them having any kind of dispute or problem,” Joiner said.
Police do not expect any forthcoming arrests.
