The Glenwood baseball team captured its 18th state title by sweeping Pike Liberal in the best-of-three AISA Class AAA championship series at Paterson Field on Wednesday.
The Gators rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to take the first game 3-2 before clinching the title with a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
Glenwood led 5-1 early in Game 2 but Pike strung together four straight hits in a four-run sixth off Glenwood starter Joseph Fincher that tied the game. The Gators contributed to the inning, misplaying a line drive into a double and allowing another run to score on a throwing error.
But Glenwood answered in the bottom of the sixth. Chase Silvani led off with a bunt single and moved to second on an error. After a bunt single by Will Allison, Matthew Kuhlenberg hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track in center that made it 6-5.
Never miss a local story.
Pike put runners at the corners in the seventh, but Fincher got Sam Carroll to foul out to the catcher to end the game.
