Auburn made sure it didn't back its way into the SEC tournament, hammering Tennessee 18-0 at Plainsman Park to clinch a spot in Hoover for the first time since 2003.
Trent Mummey and Brian Fletcher hit two home runs apiece, part of a 22-hit barrage. Every Auburn starter had at least two hits.
Mummey, Fletcher and Ryan Jenkins each had three hits. Mummey drove in seven runs, four coming on a third-inning grand slam that made it 11-0.
Starter Cole Nelson (6-3) reverted to his early-season form, winning for the first time in conference play since March 20 against Georgia. He threw a complete game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out three.
Never miss a local story.
The Tigers (34-17, 16-10 SEC) moved within a half game of Ole Miss for first place in the SEC West. The Rebels' game against Alabama is still in progress.
The teams play the rubber game of the series today at 2 p.m. ET. Auburn will start left-hander Grant Dayton (6-2, 5.00 ERA).
