Joseph Grant Laverty, a 17-year-old Northside High School student, died today from injuries sustained in a two-car collision Saturday night.
Laverty was a passenger in a 2000 Honda Civic driven by Chad Starling, 19, when it collided with a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Steven Cody Hodge, 18, police said. According to reports, Hodge said he was driving west near Ranch Forest Drive when the Civic, headed east, entered his lane and collided with his vehicle.
A 16-year-old passenger in the Tahoe told police that he saw two men get out of the Civic and run east along Mobley Road, reports state.
When officers arrived, they discovered Laverty inside the Civic. They had to use equipment to extricate him from the car before he was taken to The Medical Center, police said.
Hodge told officers that the Civic’s driver was Starling, who later arrived at The Medical Center with injuries. Starling told police he didn’t remember the accident. Starling also took a breath alcohol test, which showed he had a reading of .00, reports state.
Laverty, who remained in the hospital with critical injuries, was pronounced dead at 8:50 a.m. today, said Deputy Coroner Freeman Worley. No charges have been filed, but the incident remains under investigation. Stay with ledger-enquirer.com for more details.
