Columbus Municipal Court Stephen Hyles was named U.S. Magistrate judge for the Columbus Division on Monday.
Hyles, a longtime criminal defense attorney, has been on the municipal bench for less than two years.
He defeated incumbent Haywood Turner in 2008.
Hyles replaces magistrate Mallon Faircloth, who is retiring.

The appointment was confirmed in a release from U.S. District Court Judge Clay Land, who is in the Middle District of Georgia, based in Columbus.
In making the announcement, Land noted that Hyles’ judicial experience, intellect, temperament and reputation as an outstanding lawyer make him uniquely qualified for the position, the news release stated.
