A Valley, Ala, man faces charges in connection with the Saturday kidnapping of the owner of Milner’s Grocery & Deli, police said.
Someone called police about the Valley store being open and unattended around 9:30 p.m. CDT. When officers arrived at the 3096 Columbus Road business, they found items on the floor in front of the counter, the owner’s car parked out front and no one there, police said.
An investigator learned that a white truck had been seen leaving the store as a woman screamed from inside the vehicle. Authorities issued a broadcast about the truck and owner, and two officers spotted the vehicle on Columbus Road near Brown Circle about an hour later, reports state.
Officers tried to stop the truck, which slowed down before speeding off. They chased the truck until it hit spike strips, which stopped it around Columbus Road and North Street, authorities said.
Police said the suspect, 42-year-old James Bert Pollard, was arrested and charged with first-degree kidnapping. The store owner told officers that the suspect had pulled her across the counter of her shop, out the door and into his truck, reports said.
She was taken to Lanier Hospital, treated and released, police report.
The suspect is a registered sex offender and was convicted of first-degree rape in Chambers County in 1997, where he was sentenced to 10 years, police said.
