Peach State Labs was evacuated this morning due to a chemical reaction.
Columbus fire and EMS officials were called out to the lab on Chumar Street shortly before 9:30 a.m. to help deal with the situation.
Columbus Fire Marshal Chief Thomas Streeter said a chemical reaction occurred after the lab's freezer broke down and one chemical -- Luperox A98 -- reacted to the rising temperature. The chemical has to be kept below 108 degrees Fahrenheit and can irritate the eyes and skin.
Streeter said lab workers reacted immediately when the freezer broke, called emergency personnel and kept the chemical on ice. The labs were evacuated.
Once emergency personnel arrived, Streeter said the situation was under control within 20 minutes. There were no injuries.
