A Columbus man first facing a murder accusation had the charge reduced to voluntary manslaughter when he pleaded guilty Monday, court officials said.
Ivan Johnson, 40, pleaded guilty in connection with the March 2008 death of 1-year-old Jaylon Love. Muscogee County Superior Court Judge Frank Jordan Jr. sentenced him to 20 years in prison, officials said.
Defense attorney Richard Hagler, who represents Johnson, said prosecutors dropped a charge of cruelty to children.
Police said the child, who received the injuries Feb. 28, 2008, died of cerebral hemorrhaging — an injury received while in Johnson’s care.
Jaylon’s mother was at National Guard training at Fort Jackson, S.C., at the time of her child’s death, police said.
