Jeff Speck, who co-authored "Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream," will be speaking at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday in the Columbus Convention & Trade Center.
Speck also wrote "Smart Growth Manual," which has recently been released.
Speck's speech, "The Livable City: Community Revitalization the Smart Growth Way," is part of MidTown Inc.'s Community Speakers Series and is co-sponsored by the Coalition for Sound Growth.
Speck was director of design at the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003-07. He was responsible for two initiatives, the Mayors' Institute on City Design and Your Town. Both programs taught design skills to city leaders around the country.

He was director of town planning at Duany Plater-Zyberk & Co., which developed Seaside and Rosemary Beach in Florida. Speck is a contributing editor to Metropolis magazine and serves on the sustainability task force of the Department of Homeland Security.
Speck will sign books after his lecture.
The breakfast lecture is $10, and must be purchased by 5 p.m. Monday.
