Authorities in Lee County, Ala., are reassuring Smiths Station residents that reports of a shooting there had nothing to do with the town's schools.
Sheriff Jay Jones said the call his office got about 8 a.m. EST involved a domestic situation in which a 50-year-old man shot his wife and then himself.
The self-inflicted gunshot wound proved fatal, but the wife's wound was not serious, and she was treated at the scene, Jones said.
He said the shooting was reported on Lee Road 728, which goes by the Smiths Station schools, and the location caused some concern for student safety. Students were never in danger, Jones said.
His investigators still are sorting out the details of what happened, he said.
