Columbus police have arrested a fourth suspect and charged him with murder in connection with the Nov. 9 slaying of 59-year-old Kelley Leggett.
Daveka Wade, 36, was booked Wednesday afternoon into the Muscogee County Jail where he is being held without bond. A Recorder’s Court hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, jail officials said.
Three other men -- Cleveland Gary, 23, of Columbus; Jarvis Alexander, 19, of Phenix City; and Rodger Scales, 24, of Seale, Ala. -- were arrested last week and are being held without bond. They have pleaded not guilty to to murder, two counts of aggravated assault, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Wade faces the same charges.
Police said the men were planning to rob women who were thought to have drugs but raided the wrong apartment.
Police captured the men in Phenix City after receiving a tip from a witness about the car the suspects were using. Several weapons were recovered. Attorney Stacey Jackson is defending Cleveland Gary. Police said it was Gary who told them about the apartment confusion.
Leggett’s 62-year-old brother, Theodore Leggett, also was shot and is recovering from a chest wound, police said.
