A couple on some rocks in the middle of the Chattahoochee River Sunday evening were trapped when the dam opened and the water began to rise, authorities said.
Both the man and the woman have no injuries, said Columbus Fire and EMS Battalion Chief Keith Watson.
Watson said the couple had walked to the island about 100 yards south of the 13th Street Bridge when the water was low. They couldn't hear the sirens when Georgia Power opened the dam and became trapped when the water rose and closed the way back.
A boat was sent to the couple, who were taken to the Phenix City side around 6:20 p.m., authorities said.
"They were fine," Watson said. "They weren't that far out, but they couldn't get back across."
