A one-vehicle accident in Phenix City late Sunday left one person dead.
The deceased, who hadn't been identified by police early Monday, was driving an SUV south on River Chase Drive around 10:55 a.m. when he lost control, said Lt. Andy Williams.
"It appears that speed was a factor," he added.
The SUV collided with a concrete support beneath J.R. Allen Parkway, killing the driver. No one else was injured, Williams said.
The remains of the SUV, resting close to a concrete support on the east side of the road early Monday, appeared unrecognizable as a vehicle.
The driver appears to be male, though his age and residence were unknown early Monday. The SUV had a Georgia tag, though the issuing county was also unknown.
Police remained on the scene at 12:30 a.m. Monday, as did a deputy coroner. Police cars blocked traffic from passing underneath U.S. 80, though Williams said the road would be cleared by 2 a.m.
