About 50 employers are expected at a job fair and career expo Thursday at the Columbus Convention and Trade Center on Front Avenue.
The event, which takes place 9 a.m.-2 p.m., comes with the Columbus metro area unemployment rate at 9.6 percent in December.
Some employers will be hiring, while others simply will be taking applications and discussing future opportunities with job prospects, said the Georgia Department of Labor, which is assisting sponsors Clear Channel Radio and Columbus Technical College with the fair.
The event will include access to computers for job seekers to fill out applications or prepare resumes, the department said. Anyone who already has a resume should bring plenty to the fair to give to employers, it said.
Labor department data show there were 12,319 Columbus-area residents officially classified as unemployed in December. That figure does not include people who have exhausted benefits and given up on finding work until the economy improves.
Georgia’s jobless rate in December was 10.2 percent, while Alabama had a 9.1 percent rate.
