A Columbus man remains in jail after police say he tried to rape a 21-year-old woman last weekend while she slept and then apparently attempted to kill himself.
James Curry, 47, of north Columbus, faces charges of attempted rape and false imprisonment. He appeared before Columbus Recorder’s Court Judge Michael Cielinski on Thursday, who gave Curry bonds totalling $25,000.
Detective Daniel Lyon told the judge that the 21-year-old woman woke around 5 a.m. Saturday with the suspect on top of her and trying to rape her.
“He stuffed something into her mouth and said, ‘Don’t say anything or I’ll kill you,’” Lyon said.
The item was later discovered to be a bloody sock that officers found in the bedroom.
The detective said the suspect tried to remove her pants, and she asked him what he wanted.
“He said, ‘You know what I want,’” Lyon added.
The woman punched the suspect and managed to escape. That’s when another woman walked up to the doorway, the detective said.
“She said, ‘What are you doing?’” Lyon said of the other woman. “He said, ‘I don’t know. I must have lost my mind.’”
The suspect left the scene and police were called. Officers took out warrants on the suspect, and emergency dispatchers got a call around 11 a.m. about a man at Schomburg and Warm Springs roads with a bag over his head, Lyon said.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect’s head was covered by a bag that was Duct taped to his clothes, the detective added.
“They believe he was trying to kill himself,” Lyon said. “Also, there were sleeping pills found in his truck.”
The suspect was taken to The Medical Center, where he remained for a few days before being booked into the Muscogee County Jail.
