The cutting down of most of the trees on Veterans Parkway between 13th street and 8th street may begin as soon as Tuesday.
The trees are being removed as part of Phase One of the Veterans Parkway Streetscape and Pedestrian Enhancement Project.
They will be replaced by 100 oak trees, each standing 20-25 feet tall. Already 38 crape myrtle trees have been planted in newly constructed medians.
Phase Two of the $5 million project will extend the project to Victory Drive.
Never miss a local story.
Most of the big trees coming down were found to be in poor condition.
"Left standing, they could be a danger to people," said Columbus City planner Rick Jones.
