Northside swimmer Ben Smith finished ninth in two events in Friday's preliminary rounds, landing him spots in today's Georgia High School Association Swimming and Diving State Championship consolation rounds at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
The top eight finishers in each preliminary race are placed in today's finals heat and the next eight are placed in a consolation heat. The finals and consolation rounds are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and can be streamed live at ghsa.tv.
Smith had a preliminary time of 21.90 in the 50-meter freestyle, just .03 seconds behind the eighth-place finisher. He also finished ninth in the 100 freestyle with a preliminary time of 48.71.
Northside's 200 freestyle relay team of Kevin Savabi, Jonathan Lovern, Adam Wilder and Ben Smith finished 42nd with a preliminary time of 1:38.93.

Columbus' J.D. Rousseau finished 43rd in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.91 and 55th in the 100 breaststroke preliminaries with a time of 1:07.74.
Columbus' 200 freestyle relay team of Jeremy LaBranche, Tate Hutwagner, Payden Evans and Charlie Flowers finished 40th in preliminaries with a time of 1:38.78.
Columbus' Min-Kwon Lee finished 62nd in the 100 breaststroke preliminaries with a time of 1:08.67.
Columbus' boys 400 freestyle relay team of Flowers, Ben Fuller, Rousseau and LaBranche finished 32nd with a preliminary time of 3:39.78.
In the girls portion of the preliminaries, Columbus's Rio Watson finished 39th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.90.
Columbus' girls 200 freestyle relay team of Watson, Cythia Walpole, Chandler Barre and Megan Cass finished 38th with a time of 1:51.97.
Columbus' girls 400 freestyle relay team of Cass, Barre, Walpole and Watson finished 26th with a preliminary time of 4:07.35.
