A homeless man faces an aggravated assault charge after police say he shot himself in the leg.
Samuel Lamar Cole Sr., 51, allegedly intended to shoot his 31-year-old son Saturday night, though he hit himself instead, Columbus Police Lt. Ronald Hastings said.
The suspect and his son were in a pickup truck arguing when they pulled into the parking lot of Microtel Inns & Suites, 1728 Fountain Court, around 10:05 p.m. Police don’t know why the pair was arguing.
“The father got out,” Hastings said. “He was trying to pull a pistol out of his waistband. As he was pulling it out, he shot himself in the right leg.
“He was pulling out the pistol and telling the son he was going to shoot him. He just inadvertently shot himself in the process,” the lieutenant added.
The son got his father on the ground after the shooting, tossed the gun out of reach and yelled for someone to call police. When officers arrived, they took the suspect to the hospital. He was later booked into the Muscogee County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Hastings said.
Cole is being held without bond.
