Columbus police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old man who was found lying in the road Sunday night.
Investigators don’t yet know the cause of death of Jerome Menefee, who died early Monday in a Ruben Street home, said Lt. John McMichael.
Friends of Menefee learned that he had fallen on Enoch Drive between 9 and 10 p.m. They took him to the Ruben Street home and put him to bed, the lieutenant said.
Around 5:20 a.m., Menefee was having trouble breathing, McMichael said.
“By the time the ambulance arrived, he had already apparently passed away,” he added.
Menefee had swollen eyes, though authorities don’t know if they’re from an assault or a medical condition. McMichael said there has been no report of an assault.
“We don’t know for sure that it wasn’t natural causes,” he said. “It’s an unknown cause at this point.”
Coroner Bill Thrower said if preliminary autopsy results reveal a cause of death, it could be enough to properly classify the investigation.
Menefee’s body will be sent to Atlanta for an autopsy on Tuesday. Preliminary results could be available that evening, Thrower said.
