The Atlanta Opera is set to receive a $9 million bequest, the largest gift in its history.
The bequest is from longtime board member Barbara D. Stewart, who died last year.
Marc A. Scorca, president and CEO of OPERA America, the industry association for opera, says it’s one of the larger gifts on record to a North American opera company.
Stewart requested that half of the bequest be used to grow the opera’s permanent endowment, bringing that fund to $5.6 million. The rest will be put into endowment and reserves.
Never miss a local story.
To honor her support of the opera’s artistic growth, the opera plans to dedicate one production each season to Stewart’s memory.
