The LaGrange Symphony Orchestra announces the winners of its annual SCALA competition. Each winner received $300.
Vocalist DJ Thomas, a sophomore at LaGrange College, won the Barbara Malis Award. The son of Beverly and Stanley Thomas of LaGrange, DJ studies voice with Toni Anderson. He will perform with the LaGrange Symphony Youth Orchestra on March 7.
Pianist Jieun Jang won the Ashley Hawkins Award for Keyboard/Percussion Performance. She has been studying for seven years and is a student of Kyeong-Yeon Chae.
Vocalist Megan Sharp is a senior at LaGrange High School and won the Emily Wentworth Landa Award. She has studied for more than eight years with Marty Davis. She is the daughter of Andy and Angela Sharp.
Leah Bolden, the daughter of Ricky and Glenda Bolden, is a senior at LaGrange High Schoold and won the Kathryn Mercer Merrill Award for Vocal Performance. She studies with Sally Traylor.
Violinist Christine Yin, a student at West Side Magnet School, is the daughter of William and Carol Yin of LaGrange. She won the Emily Katherine Smith Award for string performance and studies with Celeste Myall.
Any music student 18 and younger who lives in Troup, Chambers, Heard, Harris and Meriwether counties, can enter the competition. Performance may be in piano, percussion, voice, winds or strings.
