The Ledger-Enquirer live blogged the Amazing Race Season 18 Episode 3, which first aired Sunday, March 6, 2011. See a full recap below:
Zev and Justin are first place in the third leg of the Amazing Race. Mel and Mike are last place and eliminated.
The teams are currently in Broken Hill, Australia, the second Pit Stop in the Amazing Race. They leave on an overnight train ride to Sydney. Zev and Justin get to leave first, and they learn they must travel to Tokyo, Japan, and make their way to a rotating parking garage, where they'll find their next clue.
The Globetrotters leave second. The cowboys leave third. Kisha and Jen leave fourth. Everyone is making their way to the airport, though Kisha and Jen miss the first train to the airport.
The teams are hunting for the earliest flights to Japan, either through a travel agent or online. The goth kids give Travelocity a shout out.
The teams find there's a flight that lands at 6:15 a.m. that's a direct flight. However, there's one that lands 15 minutes earlier, but there's a connection in Hong Kong. Some of the teams are worried about a cancellation, and many eschew the connection.
Dating goths Kent and Vyxsin decide to take the connecting flight, as do Mel and Mike and Margie and Luke. The Globetrotters give their seats to Zev and Justin, because the latter gave the Globetrotters an essential clue during the first leg.
Of course, there's a delay with the connecting flight. Engine problems in Hong Kong mean five teams likely won't arrive 15 minutes earlier as they previously thought.
The other teams learn that they'll be landing first. Mallory is happy.
The flight lands, and the teams race outside. Gary and Mallory get the clue first: Drive to the city of Kamakura and find the Yabusame Dojo, were they'll get their next clue.
The teams get their cars from the rotating garage and start driving. Jet and Cord are in fifth place.
The second flight finally lands, 90 minutes late. Margie and Luke are in sixth place. Kent and Vyxsin are in eighth place. Zev and Justin are in last place.
The teams aren't sure how to get to Kamakura. Ron and Christina ask a passing motorist for directions, and they get to the clue first and find the Roadblock: Yabusame ritual. A team member must observe a formal demonstration involving precise movements and learn the ritual. They're then spun on a wooden horse and must shoot a target with an arrow. Once they hit the target successfully, they'll get their next clue.
Gary and Mallory are in second place. The Globetrotters are in third place. Jet and Cord appear lost.
Zev and Justin are in fifth place.
Kisha and Jen complete the ritual first and learn their next destination: They must drive to Minamiashigara and find the Kintaro Statue, where they'll get their next clue.
Zev and Justin are second. Gary and Mallory are third. Jet and Cord are ninth place. Jaime and Cara are last place when they collide with another man's car and destroy his rear view mirror. They stop and the guy calls police. They feel like they've lost the race.
Jaime and Cara deal with the police and leave to resume their search for the dojo.
Kisha and Jen ask for directions at a funeral home and keep driving.
Zev and Justin reach the statue first and learn about this leg's Detour: Prayer of Purity or Frog of Luck. In Prayer, the teams take part in a Shinto cleansing ritual. They must learn a prayer that's verbal and physical before they stand underneath a raging waterfall for one minute.
In Frog of Luck - Teams strip down and search for a buried frog in a field of mud as others pelt them with mud.
Zen and Justin and Gary and Mallory opt for Frog. Meanwhile, Ron and Christina and the Globetrotters go for Prayer.
Margie and Luke and the cowboys have just gotten the Detour clue. Jaime and Cara are in last place.
Zev and Justin find the frog first. They learn they must drive to a monument of Commodore Perry's landing in Japan, which is this leg's Pit Stop.
Kent and Vyxsin learn the Detour and decide on Frog. Jaime and Cara have just completed the bow and arrow ritual.
The Globetrotters move Christina's bag with her passport and money, either through accident or design. When Ron and Christina complete Prayer, she realizes that her bag is missing.
Kisha and Jen find the frog and are in fifth place. Meanwhile, Ron discovers that the Globetrotters moved Christina's bags to the men's changing room. He grabs it and he and his daughter drive off.
Jet and Cord find the frog and are in sixth place.
Zev and Justin are first place. They win a trip to Costa Rica.
Gary and Mallory are second place. The Globetrotters are third. Ron and Christina are fourth. Christina explains the mix up with the bags, and Phil says he'll give the Globetrotters a 30-minute penalty, putting Ron and Christina in third place.
Mel and Mike are having problems searching for the frog in the mud. The sun is setting and temperatures are dropping, leading both men into a waiting ambulance where they can warm up. That gives Jaime and Cara, who appeared destined for last place, the shot they need to stay in the race.
Kisha and Jen are fourth place. Because of the penalty, the Globetrotters are fifth. Jet and Cord are sixth. Kent and Vyxsin are seventh. Margie and Luke are eighth. Jaime and Cara are ninth and are still in the race.
Mel and Mike are last place and are eliminated from the Amazing Race.
