A Columbus man faces a charge of reckless conduct after police say a 2-year-old boy he was supervising wandered from Lakebottom Park.
Police charged Chavis Cobb, 19, in connection with the missing child at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at Lakebottom, reports state.
According to reports, a woman spotted the child running across a field as she was playing baseball with her own son. The child picked up the baseball and then threw it to the ground before running up some nearby stairs. She thought a couple on the stairs was the child’s parents, though they told the boy to stop as he slid down a hill toward a creek.
The woman then picked up the boy and asked him his name, his age and about his parents. The boy only said “daddy,” police said.
She then called 911, reports state.
Police arrived and began investigating. At some point, they spoke with the suspect who told police that he noticed the child was missing and he went to look for him. He also said he was watching four children as he played football, and that all the gates to the field were closed as he played, police said.
