A Muscogee County grand jury indicted on Tuesday a former Columbus police officer accused of a fatal hit-and-run in June 2009, records state.
Gregory Burns, 40, was indicted on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, false report of a crime and insurance fraud, court records show.
Authorities said that James Edward Collins, 24, was hit from behind as he rode a skateboard on Buena Vista Road just after midnight June 26, 2009.Collins was thrown to the curb and his skateboard was snapped in two during the impact at Buena Vista Road and Tennessee Drive, police said.
Burns was charged by police in November.

According to police, Burns served as a patrol officer in the Columbus Police Department between September 1997 and December 1998. A Shaw High School graduate, Collins joined the Marines after high school and served in Kuwait and Afghanistan, his family said.
